The Last Passenger
The rain began just after midnight, drumming against the windshield of Ethan Cross's taxi as he waited outside the nearly deserted train station. Business had been slow all evening. Most travelers had already found rides, and the station lights flickered as if they, too, were ready to call it a night.
He was about to end his shift when a woman stepped out of the station.
She wore a long gray coat despite the warm summer air, and she carried no luggage. Her face remained hidden beneath the brim of a dark hat. Without asking about the fare or the destination, she opened the rear door and slid into the back seat.
"Where to?" Ethan asked.
"Blackwood Road," she replied softly.
He hesitated....
